Knights make it three in a row

The Irondale High School girls hockey team kicked off the new year with a victory on Thursday night. The Knights extended their winning streak to a season-high three games with a 3-2 victory over Centennial at the National Sports Center's Super Rink.

Greta Nundahl, Sam Donovan and Sena Hanson all tallied goals for the Knights, whose only goals against came in the first minute of the second period while skating two players short.

In goal, Anna Pate stopped 26 of the 28 shots she faced to pick up the victory.

The victory, Irondale's 10th of the season against six losses, was the Knights' fourth in five games since Christmas. Over the holiday break, Irondale went 2-1 and finished third at the ABRA Invitational hosted by Edina and also beat St. Louis Park 11-0 in a North Suburban Conference game on New Year's Eve.

Irondale will look to keep its winning streak going on Saturday night when Tartan pays a visit to the Super Rink for a 7:30 p.m. non-conference tilt. Next week, Irondale travels to Lindstrom to take on Chisago Lakes on Tuesday and hosts St. Francis/North Branch on Friday.

Irondale boys

The new year didn't start out as well for the Irondale/St. Anthony Village boys hockey team. The Knights dropped a 4-1 decision to Chisago Lakes at the Super Rink on Thursday.

Neither team was able to generate much offense as the Wildcats led 1-0 after two periods on a goal by Jacob Breyfogle. Chisago went up 2-0 on another goal by Breyfogle in the third period and at the time that looked to be more than enough scoring.

However, less than two minutes later Irondale got a spark when Marty O'Connell knocked in a rebound off of a shot from the point by William White to make it a one-goal game again. Tony Bridgeman was also credited with an assist on the goal.

Chisago Lakes wasted little time restoring its two-goal cushion as Trevor Lushanko, who assisted on the Wildcats' first two goals, notched a score of his own just 46 seconds after O'Connell's lamplighter.

That turned out to be the back-breaker for Irondale, which found it difficult to generate many quality scoring opportunities.

Chisago closed out the scoring with 92 seconds left in the game as Breyfogle completed his hat trick.

Since a victory over Robbinsdale Cooper on Dec. 20, Irondale has lost four of five. The Knights (5-8) go in search victory No. 6 of the season on Saturday when they play an 8 p.m. game against Owatonna at Four Seasons Arena.
