Inquiring Minds: What is the meaning of TED?

Q. What does the “TED” in TED Talks stand for?  Where do they get their name?

A. TED Talks — those conveniently brief, easy-to-digest, entertaining online talks that give you the sense of having encountered a new idea without having to expend too much effort to understand it — got their start at a conference in 1984 at a conference devoted to Technology, Entertainment and Design (or TED).

There are over 2600 TED talks currently available on their website www.ted.com/talks.

To date, the all-time most popular TED talk ever was a 2006 lecture by Sir Ken Robertson, entitled “Do Schools Kill Creativity?” It has been viewed over 48.5 million times.
