Roseville volleyball clinches state berth

The Roseville Area High School volleyball team ended a 19-year drought when it wrapped up the Section 4AAA championship on Thursday night. By beating North St. Paul, the Raiders' clinched the school's first state-tournament berth since 1993.

Fourth-seeded Roseville took care of the second-seeded Polars in three games, 27-25, 25-16, 26-10, at Washington Magnet School in St. Paul. Monica Burich's block ended the match and sent the Roseville players and fans into a frenzied celebration.

Roseville will join seven other teams for the Class AAA state tournament, which runs Nov. 8-10 at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul. Times for all Class AAA matches during the first two days of the tournament are 9 and 11 a.m. On Saturday, the consolation championship match is at 9 a.m., third place will be decided starting at 3 p.m. and the championship match is set for 5 p.m.

Under new rules set forth by the Minnesota State High School League over the summer, the head coaches of the eight tournament teams will vote to determine the top five seeds. The fourth and fifth seeds will play each other in the first and the other three quarterfinal match-ups will be determined by a blind draw of the three unseeded teams.

Roseville was the first Class AAA team to clinch a spot in the state tournament. The other seven section finals are all scheduled for Saturday night.
