MVHS girls tennis faces familiar foe in state tournament

The Mounds View High School girls tennis team goes after its second consecutive state consolation championship on Wednesday. The Mustangs take on Suburban East Conference rival Stillwater at noon at the Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota.

Mounds View reached the consolation final by beating Elk River 6-1 in the consolation semifinals on Tuesday afternoon. The Mustangs swept the three doubles matches against the Elks and added three singles victories.

Mounds View's doubles wins came from Mari Cartwright and Paige Thayer at No. 1, Annie DeWitt and Kenzie Anderson at No. 2 and Lexi Pfenning and Mandy Huang at No. 3. Summer Brills (No. 1), Kourtney Jakubic (No. 2) and Catie Meinen (No. 4) earned Mounds View's singles points.

Mounds View opened the state tournament Tuesday morning with a 6-1, quarterfinal loss to Rochester Century. The Mustangs' lone point came from Lexi Pfenning and Mandy Huang's victory at No. 3 doubles.

Stillwater dropped its quarterfinal 7-0 to Minnetonka and rebounded to beat St. Cloud Tech 5-2 in the consolation semifinals.

During the regular season, Mounds View beat Stillwater 5-2 to claim a share of the Suburban East Conference championship. The Mustangs shared the title with Stillwater, whose only conference loss was to Mounds View. The Mustangs' lone SEC loss was to Hastings.
