LETTER: Lamenting the loss of PJW Auto

To the Editor:

Whether you knew it or not, Nov. 1 was a sad day for residents of New Brighton and the northern suburbs. For, on that day a place of business officially closed its door after 39 years of honest, trustworthy and economic service to the owners of motor vehicles.

PJW Automotive in New Brighton has been my place to go after the vehicle warranty runs out for over 20 years. They were always able to diagnose vehicle problems and repair them for a fair and reasonable cost.

The closure, according to owner Pat Whelan, was what most likely will be happening to many specialty businesses in the future — they could not find qualified technical help. It is disheartening when small businesses cannot find quality people to work. The trend for work-from-home technology is becoming the norm these days.

Even the public television program “This Old House” has addressed the topic of the lack of skilled craftsman to construct or refurbish buildings.

I wish all the best to Pat, Mike and the rest of the employees at PJW Automotive. And I hope that the so-called “Y” generation realizes that they won’t be able to find repairs via a delivery from Amazon.
