Raiders compete at state ski meets

The high school competitive skiing season came to a close last week with the Alpine and Nordic state meets on back-to-back days at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. Roseville Area High School sent competitors to both events.



Representing Roseville at the Alpine state meet on Feb. 15 were junior Elizabeth Kiresuk and sophomore Nicole Murray. Kiresuk was making her second state appearance while Murray competed in the state meet for the first time.

Kiresuk improved on her ninth-place finish from last year by moving up to fifth place this season. Her combined time for the two runs was 1:17.56. She posted the fifth-fastest time of 38.68 seconds on the Red run and was seventh on the Blue run in 38.88 seconds.

Murray wound up in 61st place overall with a two-run time of 1:30.31. Her 44.89 seconds on the Red run was 57th overall and she was 68th on the Blue run in 45.42 seconds.

The Blake School’s Nellie Ide, a senior, won the individual championship with a combined time of 1:13.63. Chisago Lakes won the girls team championship.



Four RAHS athletes took to the trails at Giants Ridge for the Nordic state meet on Feb. 16. Sophomore Dan Lee competed in the boys’ races while senior Naomi Boehm, junior Sam Kurkowski and sophomore Carly Dahms raced in the girls’ meet.

Kurkowski recorded the highest finish for any of the Roseville girls as she came in 19th overall with a total time of 34 minutes, 41.9 seconds. Her freestyle time was 16 minutes, 54 seconds and she posted a time of 17 minutes, 47.9 seconds in the classic race.

This was Kurkowski’s fourth appearance in the Nordic state meet. She first competed at state as an eighth grader in 2014 as part of Roseville’s team that qualified. She finished 100th overall that year. 

Kurkowski jumped up to 43rd place in 2015 and improved to 27th in 2016. Her time in 2016 was 35 minutes, 35 seconds.

Dahms and Boehm finished fairly close together in terms of place as Dahms was 47th and Boehm finished in 50th place. Dahms’ total time between the two races was 36 minutes, 12.4 seconds while Boehm completed the races in 36 minutes, 20.9 seconds.

Boehm was making her second appearance in the state Nordic meet. As a freshman in 2014, she competed as part of Roseville’s team and finished 73rd overall.

This was Dahms’ first trip to the state Nordic meet.

Ely senior Erin Bianco won the girls’ pursuit title with a total time of 32 minutes, 20 seconds. Bianco’s performance also helped Ely win the team championship with 413 points. Robbinsdale Armstrong was second at 394 points and Minneapolis Southwest took third with 368 points.

On the boys’ side, Roseville’s Lee, making his first state-meet appearance, finished in 55th place with a pursuit time of 31 minutes, 17.3 seconds. He traversed the freestyle course in 15 minutes, 18 seconds and completed the classic race in 15 minutes, 59.3 seconds.

Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village senior Xavier Mansfield claimed the boys’ pursuit title by nine seconds over Eagan’s Patrick Acton. Mansfield’s final time was 28 minutes, 23.2 seconds.

Minneapolis Southwest took home the boys’ team championship by scoring 421 points, beating runner-up Wayzata by 16 points. St. Paul Highland Park finished third with 385 points.
