Winters in Minnesota can be a challenging time, especially for older homeowners.

When the snow piles up, many seniors find it physically impossible or financially difficult to manage on their own. That’s when DARTS volunteers come to the rescue.

Years ago, a senior in Dakota County described DARTS volunteers as “just wonderful! I think of them as angels.” And so, the DARTS Snow Angel program was born.

Keeping seniors’ sidewalks and driveways free from snow and ice helps them get safely to their vehicles or mailbox and allow family and other service providers easy access to their homes.

This past holiday season, DARTS volunteers and staff not only shoveled driveways and walkways, but they also gave each senior a “Winter Snuggle Kit” to bring cheer and keep them comfortable this winter. The kits, donated and packaged by Prudential Insurance, contained numerous items including a warm scarf, cocoa and a holiday greeting card.

DARTS received a thank you card from a woman who wrote, “I love the notepad to communicate with friends and the pocket tissues to dry our eyes for friends we’ve lost. But the pocket mirror will be handy, so I can put lipstick on quickly if we get company! Ha!”

Another senior commented upon receiving the gift box from a volunteer, “That was really wonderful. I’ve been having a hard time lately, and it made me so happy, I cried. I really appreciate all the help I get from DARTS, you know, I wouldn’t be living here without it.”

Established in 1974, DARTS is a community-based nonprofit organization in Dakota County that connects people to services and partnerships that improve their quality of life, help them age well, and enable them to engage in their community.
